Basket weaving – or basket making – was a familiar sight in villages and markets at the beginning of the last century. The basket maker travelled the region on foot or with a handcart, carrying a towering load of woven goods: from shopping and bread baskets to sturdy harvest baskets for use in the fields. The material – often flexible, locally harvested willow – was crafted with skill into products that were both functional and beautiful.

The craft of the chair caner, specialised in restoring and creating chairs with woven seats and backs, also has a long history. Using natural materials such as rattan, reed and seagrass, furniture was brought back to life.
